An assembled IKEA kitchen in a modern interior

IKEA METOD kitchen assembly: step-by-step guide.

An IKEA METOD kitchen is one of the most popular choices for a new kitchen. The modular system offers endless possibilities, but assembly is complex. In this step-by-step guide, we explain how professional METOD kitchen assembly works.

Step 1: Preparation and check

Before assembly begins, we check that all parts are present. A METOD kitchen consists of dozens of packages: cabinets, doors, drawers, hinges, shelves, legs, worktop, backsplash and fronts. We verify the delivery is complete and check for transport damage.

Step 2: Assemble base cabinets

The base cabinets are assembled first. This includes:

  • Assembling cabinet frames with the supplied cams and connectors
  • Installing legs and adjusting height (standard 80cm work height)
  • Leveling cabinets and coupling them together
  • Installing plinths

Leveling is crucial: if the base cabinets aren't straight, every subsequent step will have problems.

Step 3: Install worktop

The worktop is the most visible part of the kitchen. METOD kitchens often use laminate or solid wood worktops. The worktop must:

  • Be cut to size (for sink or hob cutouts)
  • Be installed level
  • Be secured with angle brackets to the base cabinets
  • For wood worktops: be treated with oil or lacquer

Step 4: Mount wall cabinets

Wall cabinets are attached to the wall with a suspension rail. This is precision work:

  • The rail must be mounted level
  • The wall must be suitable for the weight (special plugs for drywall)
  • Cabinets are hung on the rail and coupled together
  • Doors are mounted and adjusted

Step 5: Doors, drawers and fronts

Adjusting doors and drawers is the most time-consuming part. Each hinge has three adjustment options: height, depth and lateral alignment. For drawers, the soft-close mechanism must be correctly set.

Step 6: Finishing

The final step is finishing: installing plinths, mounting decorative trims, sealing joints with silicone sealant and cleaning the kitchen. Built-in appliances (oven, refrigerator, dishwasher) are also installed and connected.

How long does METOD kitchen assembly take?

  • Small kitchen (4-6 cabinets): 1 day
  • Medium kitchen (6-10 cabinets): 1-2 days
  • Large kitchen (10+ cabinets, island, appliances): 2-3 days
