IKEA BESTA is one of the most popular storage systems for the living room. Whether you choose a floating wall cabinet, a cabinet on legs or a combination with doors and drawers, proper assembly is essential for a clean result. In this article, you'll learn what to look out for when assembling BESTA.
BESTA: wall mounting vs floor model
BESTA cabinets come in two configurations:
- Wall mounting (floating): The cabinet is attached to the wall with a suspension rail. This creates a sleek, floating effect. Important: the wall must be strong enough to support the weight. Special plugs are needed for drywall or aerated concrete walls.
- Floor model (on legs or plinth): The cabinet stands on the floor. This is easier to install and doesn't require heavy wall anchoring. However, the floor must be level.
What to look out for with BESTA assembly?
- Wall type: Check if the wall is suitable for wall mounting. Brick walls are fine, but drywall or sand-lime brick walls require special plugs.
- Level: A BESTA cabinet must be level in all directions. For wall mounting, this starts with a correctly installed suspension rail.
- Doors and drawers: BESTA doors need to be adjusted after assembly. This is precision work, a millimeter off is immediately visible.
- Lighting: BESTA has a built-in system for LED lighting. The wiring must be neatly concealed behind the cabinet.
- Combinations: When placing multiple cabinets side by side, the coupling pieces must be correctly installed for a seamless transition.
Common DIY mistakes
- Suspension rail not level: This is the most common mistake. If the rail is crooked, the entire cabinet will be crooked.
- Wrong plugs: Standard plugs are often used for drywall or aerated concrete walls, which have insufficient load capacity.
- Doors not aligned: BESTA doors have adjustment screws, but many DIYers don't know how to adjust them.
- Cables not concealed: With wall-mounted lighting, cables are often left visible, ruining the clean look.
How long does BESTA assembly take?
Assembly time depends on the number of cabinets and complexity:
- Single wall cabinet (60-120cm): 1–2 hours
- Multiple cabinets side by side (2-3 units): 2–4 hours
- Complete wall with doors, drawers and lighting: 4–6 hours
